Surveying

Measurement of bird abundance and movement using video and thermal imaging

6th April 2005

Peter Barlow, Outersight’s Managing Director was invited to present to an international workshop organised by COWRIE (Collaborative Offshore Wind Research into the Environment), an organisation set up by The Crown Estates. The techniques and methodologies developed by Outersight received a warm welcome by the participants, which included experts from wind power companies, government organisations and research centres from around the world. The COWRIE workshop report is expected in July/ August 2005.

Outersight is now looking for research partnership and funding to develop the analysis software and to test a system in the offshore environment.

14th January 2005

Outersight is currently developing a video and thermal imaging based system to aid in the surveying of bird numbers in areas where wind farms are proposed. The system is specifically aimed at the new batch of offshore generation sites that are shortly going through an Environmental Impact Assessment.

Outersight’s system will be able to provide information on flight altitude, speed location and direction of travel, and unlike RADAR based surveys, birds at low altitude or on the surface will also be observed.

Year round observations will be possible, as the cameras will be remotely controlled and powered from wind and solar energy.
