St Kilda

St Kilda Video Link

Update 28th March 2003

Unfortunately, due to a number of objections from the MOD and some individuals, the Western Isles Council rejected the proposal to install a satellite linked remote observation system on this wonderful island. Having been privileged to have spent some time on St Kilda, we feel that this would have been a wonderful opportunity to allow people from around the world to experience a taste of this natural wonder, without causing a detrimental impact to the wildlife and scenery of this unique archipelago.

A tribute must go to the staff at the Scottish Seabird Centre, who put a great deal of time and effort into driving this project on over the last few years, against a tide of institutional apathy and petty politics. Well done!

28th November 2003

The St Kilda Video link is a very exciting project that will allow tens of thousands of people “virtual” access to the island without having any detrimental environmental impact on the island and it’s wildlife.

The project has been delayed until a decision on planning permission is made by the Western Isles Council. Even if a decision was made today, the weather conditions at this time of year mean that it would be impractical to install the system until the springtime. We do hope to have the system up and running by the end of March 2004.

Although the delay is a disappointment, in many ways it is a good thing, as it allows us to take advantage of the latest developments in wireless networking and satellite transmission, as well as more efficient video encoding units. At Outersight we are constantly seeking better ways to do things, and we research a number of industry sectors to see if a technology developed for one industry can be borrowed to help with our projects.

We are currently investigating the possibility of linking into the weather stations that are located on the island, so we will be able to display live weather information from the remotest land mass of Europe.
