RSPB Hen Harrier

Muirshiel Country Park located to the west of Glasgow in Scotland is the summer home of a few pairs of Hen Harriers. These amazing birds nest and bring up their young in the undergrowth of open moorland. They are very sensitive to disturbance and not many pairs have had camera systems set up to observe their nests.

The RSPB in Scotland asked Outersight to review the existing camera system, and repair and improve it so that it was more reliable, easier to install and generally better quality. We were able to make a number of improvements that now allow the wardens to install it very quickly causing as little disturbance as possible. Beforehand the system had to be installed with a specialist engineer on hand to wire the system up once it was in location, this took time and caused disturbance to the nest site. By “connectorising” the system we managed to make it “plug and play”, allowing rapid deployment at a time best suited to the nest site and wardens, and not dictated by engineer availability.

Some amazing footage has been captured by the wardens and this can be seen alongside the live video feed at the Visitor Centre at Muirshiel Country Park.
